Overview
In 1656 Amsterdam, young Jewish philosopher Bento de Spinoza watches his world collapse when his closest friend is executed for printing forbidden ideas. The city is gripped by plague, fear, and religious zeal, and Bento's growing habit of questioning sacred truths makes him a danger to both Church and synagogue. Amid this turmoil, he meets Rembrandt van Rijn, the once-celebrated painter now sliding into debt and disgrace.
